Himuro Shrine; the emperor's ice house

Himuro Shrine; the emperor's ice house

Ice lanterns line the walk to the shrine.
An ice altar in front of the kagura-dan.
Himuro Shrine has a pond which was once used for collecting ice.
You can see the volume of water that is coming down these stairs from the melting ice.
The shrine has a number of cherry trees that are an attraction in the spring.

You can feel the heat from the candle flames if you place your hand over the cold ice.
Note that the ice blocks are all setting on ema (wooden prayer plates).

By setting an iPhone to display different colors with 100% screen brightness and propping it up next to the ice I was able to achieve lighting effects for some photos.
